ABOUT ME
Hi, I'm Jen! For as long as I can remember, I have always been training dogs, yet it took a disillusioned decade in the graphic design industry before I finally put on my big girl pants and set out to realise my dream of working with these amazing animals. Studying canine psychology, behaviour and dog training with the Institute of Modern Dog Trainers (IMDT) since 2019, I gained IMDT membership status in 2021, qualified as an accredited IMDTB behaviourist in 2024, and haven't looked back.

Ok, I'm a dog lover, that goes without saying. But, more importantly, as a mum to a 4-year old and owner of two Basset Hounds (often referred to as one of the most stubborn dog breeds on the planet), I know how frustrating it is to not be listened to. So, while the focus of much dog training today is on what a dog "should" or "should not" do, my focus is rather more "how can we make this easier for you, the owner?" I believe that training isn't about 'obedience' but instead understanding your dog's behaviour, improving the communication you have with them... all so that ultimately you can all have a far easier life together.
I've been around a bit... I've worked as a trainer in a local boarding kennels, and as Training and Volunteer Officer and Training Advisor with the ADUK charity Dog A.I.D. (Dog Assistance In Disability), who coach physically disabled people to train their own pet dog to become their accredited assistance dog. I have run group training classes and workshops, and am qualified in both human and canine first aid.
Positive Training for the
REAL WORLD
Like a growing number of dog trainers and training bodies today, my philosophy when it comes to dog training methods is positivity – positive reinforcement training for a positive outcome. This means that we positively reinforce good behaviour in dogs (using food, toys, play and praise as rewards, for example) and never use any techniques or tools that might cause fear, pain or discomfort. And that's not being 'soft' on your dog, or 'spoiling' them... that's because positive reinforcement training is based on psychological study (both canine and human) and is proven to have longer lasting results than 'traditional' or so-called 'balanced' training methods, which, as they are based on 'correcting' unwanted behaviour using methods that cause fear or discomfort, can ultimately lead to more behaviour problems, as well as risking harm to the relationship you have with your dog.

And who would want to do that to their best friend, frankly?

THE TRAINING GOAL
You can't have a perfect dog. But you can have an easier life.
As a busy (and always tired...) mum, frankly all I want is an easier life. And I know how difficult it can be when behavioural issues seemingly take over and make that seem impossible. That's why my goal is, essentially, to help you have the life you want with your dog – whether by training in some great behaviours you want to see, or training out behaviours your don't.

No amount or technique of training will create the perfect dog – there's just no such thing. (There's no such thing as a perfect human, so why should there be a perfect dog?) However, through positive training and communication, there can be perfect partnerships between dog and owner and perfect lives together... that's what I aim for.
QUALIFICATIONS & EXPERIENCE
Having studied with them for several years, I gained Distinction-Level membership of the Institute of Modern Dog Trainers (IMDT) in 2021, and Level 5 accredited and qualified behaviourist status with the Institute of Modern Dog Trainers: Behaviour (IMDTB) in 2024 – I am therefore a fully qualified and accredited canine trainer and behaviourist, and a recognised member of the UK Dog Training and Behaviour Charter. As a fully force-free training organisation, I am a proud member of the Pet Professional Guild, pioneering positive reinforcement in training.
I am also qualified in both canine and human first aid and carry an enhanced DBS check.
